Report context

Three Maine systems and their 2025 reports

These source descriptions come from existing system profiles reviewed July 31, 2026. The reports describe past monitoring; later notices keep their own dates.

Auburn · ME0090070

Lake Auburn, with a separate system identity

Auburn Water District’s 2025 report identifies Lake Auburn as its source. Sharing the lake with Lewiston does not merge the two systems or make their report results interchangeable.

Auburn’s profile also preserves a July 31, 2026 observation of a state order dated July 29 for Merrow Road and Kassbohrer Way. That historical observation does not establish whether an order applies today; use the current state and provider instructions.

Bangor · ME0090110

Floods Pond and a separately dated notice

Bangor’s 2025 report identifies one surface-water intake at Floods Pond in Otis. Its report also contains a notice about inaccurate chlorine-analyzer data and missing actual disinfectant-level records during periods on January 10–12, 2026.

The 2026 notice is separate from the 2025 reporting period. Keep its event dates and instructions with the notice; the annual report’s title does not make every included item part of 2025.

Lewiston · ME0090830

The same lake, a different public water system

Lewiston’s 2025 report also names Lake Auburn. Use Lewiston’s PWSID, ME0090830, and its own report when that is your supplier. A common source does not establish an address’s provider, identical distribution conditions, or a household-tap result.

Statewide context

Know what each Maine record can tell you

System identity

A water source can serve more than one system

Auburn and Lewiston both describe Lake Auburn in their reports but have different PWSIDs. Bangor identifies Floods Pond in Otis, whose location is different from the supplier’s name. Match the supplier on your bill or confirm it with your landlord or utility before choosing a report.

Source maps

Protection areas are different from water-quality results

Maine’s Public Water Resources Information System provides source locations, owner contacts, wellhead and source-protection areas, and related land information. Its official guide explicitly says water-quality and water-system operational data are not available there.

A source-protection area identifies land relevant to protecting a water source. It does not establish the pipes serving your home or a result at your tap.

Order types

Read the specific order and affected area

Maine publishes separate guidance for Boil Water, Do Not Drink, and Do Not Use orders. These labels have different instructions. Read the issuing authority’s current notice for the exact system, affected area, start date, and any later updates; do not treat the order types as interchangeable.

System identity

Use the exact PWSID as a cross-check

EPA’s exact identity record for ME0090070 names AUBURN WATER DISTRICT. Compare the name and full ID with the supplier’s annual report. Lewiston is ME0090830 and Bangor is ME0090110; a similar name or shared lake is not enough to select the right record.

  1. Find your supplier and PWSID on a bill or annual report.
  2. Compare both fields with the official record; retain the ME prefix and leading zeros.
  3. Ask the supplier or Maine Drinking Water Program about an unclear identity before applying a report or notice to your service.

Source-protection geography

Read the map’s requirements and scope first

Maine’s resource-mapping guide provides data for use in Google Earth and says Google Earth must be installed to view it. The guide is useful for understanding what the source and protection layers contain before opening the data.

The map is a visual representation and may not include all information held by the state. It supplies source context, not water-quality readings or proof of service to a property.

Annual reports

Choose the provider’s report and reporting year

Auburn and Bangor maintain official report pages; Lewiston lists reports with its water resources. Use the document’s PWSID and covered period as well as its title. Bangor’s 2025 report demonstrates why a later notice inside a report needs a separate date.

If the correct report is unavailable or difficult to use, ask the provider for that system’s report, an accessible copy, or language assistance.

Orders and notices

Check the current state and provider instructions

Maine’s safety-alert page and drinking-water-order guidance provide the official starting points. Match the system and affected area, then read the actual order and updates. A historical notice or a missing entry does not establish today’s conditions.

Bangor’s separately published notice records distribution on February 17, 2026; the version included in its report records distribution on March 31, 2026. Both concern the January 10–12 analyzer-data episode. Those document dates do not establish current resolution.

Service-line materials

Ask how unknown material was investigated

Maine’s service-line inventory guidance asks systems to use supporting records and investigation when classifying materials. It cautions that a historical plumbing-code lead ban alone is not sufficient documentation for every line.

Ask your provider what its inventory records for both portions of your service line and how unknown material is handled. An inventory classification is different from a household water test; this guide does not assign pipe material from a building’s age.

Private wells

Follow Maine’s testing and laboratory guidance

Maine CDC says private-well owners are responsible for testing their water and offers free technical assistance. Its guidance recommends annual tests for coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrates and nitrites, plus a broader list of tests every three to five years.

Use the state’s full guidance to choose the tests for your circumstances and find a certified laboratory. A public-system report does not test your individual well.

PFAS information

Choose public-system or private-well information

Maine’s public-system PFAS page provides monitoring resources and links separate private-well assistance and laboratory information. Choose the pathway that matches your supply, and check the system or well, sample date, compounds, and units when reading a result.

The page also contains dated regulatory updates. This guide does not treat an old update as a current rule or infer a household result from a source map.

Common questions

Using Maine water information

Can Auburn and Lewiston use the same report?

Both reports name Lake Auburn, but Auburn Water District is ME0090070 and Lewiston is ME0090830. Use the report for your confirmed supplier; a shared source does not make the systems’ results interchangeable.

Does the source-protection map show my water quality?

No. Maine’s mapping guide explicitly excludes water-quality and operational data. Its source and protection layers are different from utility service boundaries, sample results, or a household-well test.

Why is a 2026 notice included in Bangor’s 2025 report?

The report includes a separately dated notice about analyzer records from January 10–12, 2026. Read the notice’s event and distribution dates separately from the annual report’s 2025 monitoring period.

Does a missing alert mean no order applies to my property?

No. Confirm your system and affected area, read the current official instructions, and ask the provider when the status is unclear. A historical report, old notice, or missing entry cannot establish today’s conditions.
