Report context

Three Massachusetts reports with different scopes

The existing Boston, Worcester, and Springfield profiles were reviewed July 12, 2026. Their 2025 report overviews preserve local system identity, sample categories, and dated disclosures; this guide’s review does not make those measurements current.

Boston · 3035000

Boston’s local appendix is separate from MWRA

Boston purchases treated surface water from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority. Its report combines MWRA regional material for PWSID 6000000 with a Boston-local appendix for 3035000.

The Boston appendix discloses a lead action-level exceedance in fall 2025. The existing overview retains that dated disclosure and the local lead/copper results without treating MWRA’s regional tables as Boston-local measurements.

Worcester · 2348000

Keep source and distribution results separate

Worcester’s 2025 report separates source-water, distribution-system, lead/copper, and other analyses. The existing profile’s nitrate and chlorine overview keeps each result’s units and sampling context.

A highest individual sample or range endpoint is not automatically the same measure as a running annual average. Use the measure identified by the report when comparing a result with its listed standard.

Springfield · 1281000

Annual results and a later notice have their own dates

Springfield’s existing profile includes selected 2025 report results and a separately dated July 2, 2026 HAA5 notice. The later notice is not part of the 2025 monitoring period.

Read the provider’s current notices for updated instructions and the scope of any affected area. The historical report and notice do not establish today’s conditions at a tap.

Statewide context

Understand Massachusetts system documents

Public-system oversight

Use MassDEP’s system identity

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection regulates public drinking-water supplies. Its Public Water System Document Search identifies each supply by a PWS ID, name, class, and town.

Use the identifier shown in that record. Boston’s MassDEP record is 3035000; the MWRA wholesale system is a separate entity. A matching city or a supplier relationship does not confirm the provider for a particular property.

Document types

A registration certificate is not a water test

MassDEP’s search separates Annual Statistical Reports, Consumer Confidence Reports, Certificates of Registration, and Compliance Monitoring Schedules. The Boston example also lists approved lead/copper sampling sites and a service-line inventory.

The statistical report describes operations such as inventory and pumping volumes. A monitoring schedule describes required monitoring, while the CCR covers its reporting year. Choose the document that answers your question; a registration or schedule is not a sample result or current advisory.

Regional and local water

Keep the supplier and local-source labels

MWRA’s community PFAS resource includes local-source testing from communities that also use MWRA water. Those local-source records have their own system, sample, and reporting context.

Match the source and date before comparing results. This site’s selected city and system records are not a statewide inventory or a ranking, and a regional supplier’s results do not determine conditions in every building it supplies.

Official system lookup

Find a Massachusetts system and its documents

MassDEP’s public search application provides system details and documents organized by type and year. Its direct application is also useful when the Mass.gov introduction cannot be opened.

Search steps

Select the PWS and retrieve its documents

  1. Open the Public Water System Document Search application.
  2. Use Select a PWS by ID # or Select a PWS by Name. Match the number and provider name before continuing.
  3. Choose Retrieve Documents and allow the system details to load. Confirm the displayed PWS ID # and Name.
  4. Choose the relevant document type and year under Documents Available for Download. If the record or document is unclear, ask the provider for help and confirm service to your property.

Verified example

Boston Water and Sewer Commission · 3035000

Selecting 3035000 and choosing Retrieve Documents returned Boston Water And Sewer Commission (Mwra) during this review. The record included a 2025 Consumer Confidence Report and separately labeled registration, monitoring, and service-line documents.

The parenthetical MWRA relationship does not change Boston’s local PWSID to 6000000. Match the system described by the document before using its results.

Annual reports

Use the report year and request a usable copy

MassDEP’s search groups CCRs by year; Worcester’s Water and Sewer page also links current and archived reports. The three existing overviews above retain their original profile-review dates.

If a report is missing, a link fails, or you need another format or language, ask your utility for the specific year and what it can provide. A file being listed does not mean every document has been reviewed on this site.

Current notices and alerts

Match the notice to the provider and affected area

Springfield maintains Public Notices / Avisos públicos and separate disinfection-byproduct information. Boston publishes news and provider contacts. Check issue dates, affected areas, and later updates before applying a notice to your service.

AlertWorcester describes notifications by phone or email, including boil-water orders and other community alerts. Ask your own provider which notification options apply; enrollment or an empty archive does not prove that no current notice applies.

Lead service lines and testing

Confirm pipe material separately from a water test

Boston’s lead guidance explains that its water-service map uses observations made at water meters and tells owners to contact the Commission to confirm pipe composition. A map classification is not a measurement of lead in household water.

MWRA’s testing page directs readers to their local water department and to MassDEP’s laboratory list for residential customers and private-well owners. Confirm the test, laboratory acceptance, and collection instructions before taking a sample.

PFAS records

Distinguish community sources from MWRA supply

MWRA’s community PFAS page describes testing of local sources in participating communities and links additional water-department information. It is not a statewide assessment or a household test.

The page includes records from different years. Check the named source, compounds, sample dates, and reporting limits with the provider; this guide does not turn historic tables or old regulatory text into a current compliance conclusion.

Private wells

Use a separate testing pathway

A report for Boston, Worcester, Springfield, or MWRA describes a public supply, not a private well. EPA’s private-well resources explain the owner’s testing and maintenance role.

For testing services, MWRA’s laboratory guidance links the MassDEP list for private-well owners and residential customers. Confirm available analyses and sample acceptance directly with the laboratory.

Lookup questions

Using Massachusetts water records

Should I use Boston’s PWSID or MWRA’s?

Use 3035000 for the Boston Water and Sewer Commission local record and appendix. MWRA regional material in the same report belongs to wholesale PWSID 6000000. Keep each table with the system it describes.

Does a Certificate of Registration show contaminant results?

MassDEP describes that certificate as registration with the state. Use the relevant CCR or sample record for testing information, and the provider’s current notice for present instructions. A Compliance Monitoring Schedule describes required monitoring, not the results of that monitoring.

Is Springfield’s July 2026 notice part of its 2025 report?

No. The existing profile preserves a July 2, 2026 provider notice separately from the 2025 annual-report results. Read each period and use the official notice index to check later updates.

Does Boston’s service-line map confirm my tap-water result?

No. BWSC asks owners to confirm pipe composition with the Commission. Pipe material, a household water sample, and a system-wide report provide different information.
